“Pahoehoe,” a new solo exhibition of artwork by local artist and photographer Heather Fritz, is on display at Carry Out Cafe & Catering in Newburyport, MA. The large, water-based paintings feature colorful swirls and are sealed with a shiny epoxy resin.
The show’s name is inspired by Heather’s love of surf and nature. “Pahoehoe” comes from the Hawaiian verb “hoe,” or “to paddle” (since paddles make swirls in the water) and refers to lava with a smooth, shiny, or swirled surface.
“I love to see the beauty in everything with a fresh perspective,” said Heather. “The movement of water and sand spur people’s imaginations and provide me with a constantly changing muse. I enjoy the variability, along with the strong link to our emotions.”
Heather has been a photographer for 14 years, specializing in images that are not strictly representational, but a little more abstract. When not creating art, the North Shore native can be found most seasons at Groundswell Surf Cafe, where she is owner of the popular beachfront cafe in Salisbury, MA. The cafe serves coffee and healthy treats, rents stand up paddle boards and beach bikes, and offers yoga classes on the beach. In the winter, Fritz closes up shop and travels to discover new places and recharge.
Fritz likes to finish her paintings in a thick bar seal that can stand up to weather. She can customize the paintings to any size and for indoor or outdoor use. They can be made into a countertop, tabletop, furniture or as a backsplash in a kitchen. Special orders are accepted and Fritz notes that she is open to collaboration.
Fritz’s “Pahoehoe” series is on display in Carry Out Cafe’s gallery through December. An Artist Reception and Holiday Pop Up Shop will be held on Thursday, Dec. 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Carry Out Cafe. The public is invited to enjoy the exhibition, and get a jump on holiday shopping in a fun, relaxed environment.
Other vendors at the Pop Up Shop include: Knits and That, SoulfulSilks, Objetrove jewelry, Liz Filipancic jewelry, Bear Spirit Photography by Kay Bice and GingerSnaps Photography by Ginger Lane, who will have her line of Smart Ass cards (recently seen in a segment on The Ellen Degeneres Show).
“We are blessed to have talent like Heather’s and that of these other local artisans,” said Paula Simpson, owner of Carry Out Cafe & Catering. “I love to share this bounty and creativity with our customers – especially during the holidays.”
